What is NIOS?
NIOS, the National Institute of Open Schooling, is India’s largest open schooling system, providing educational opportunities for children up to the pre-degree level. It was created to offer a flexible, accessible learning environment for learners who may need a non-traditional educational approach. Established in 1989, NIOS aims to serve the needs of diverse learners, including children with special needs, by providing education through an open and distance learning (ODL) system.
How NIOS Helps Children with Special Needs

A Perfect Learning Journey for Your Child
NIOS offers a flexible learning environment where your child can learn at their own pace, with less pressure and more time.

Growing Confidence Beyond Academics
Our NIOS program focuses not only on academics but also on life skills, social development, and independence to help them gain confidence to succeed in both learning and life.

With personalized attention and a nurturing environment, we make sure that your child flourishes. With the right support, every child can achieve their dreams.
NIOS Courses for Your Child At SOREM
At SOREM, we offer flexible courses under NIOS at two key levels:
Secondary Course (Class 10)
The Secondary Course is equivalent to the 10th standard. In this program, students can choose subjects from the Scheme of Studies provided by NIOS. To obtain a pass certificate, students must complete a minimum of five subjects, which include one language (or a maximum of two languages), as well as other subjects from the available options. Students are allowed to take up to two additional subjects, bringing the total to seven subjects.
Key Points:
- Minimum of five subjects, including at least one language.
- Additional two subjects may be chosen.
- Flexible curriculum suited for individual needs.
- Certification upon successful completion.
Senior Secondary Course (Class 12)
The Senior Secondary Course is designed for students who are ready to pursue more advanced studies. Like the secondary level, students can select subjects based on their strengths and interests so that their learning path is personalized to their needs. The senior secondary certification allows students to pursue higher education or vocational training.
Key Points:
- Advanced study program for students ready for senior secondary education.
- Subjects can be chosen based on the child’s abilities and interests.
- Certification opens doors to higher education and skill development.
