Our Story

How SOREM Was Born: A Journey of Heart and Hope

More than four decades ago, a remarkable woman named Ms. Promila Chandra Mohan felt a calling that would forever change the lives of children with autism and developmental challenges in North India. At a time when awareness and support for such children were scarce, Promila ji saw beyond the limitations and the stigma. She envisioned a place where children, regardless of their abilities, could learn, grow, and be embraced by society with warmth and respect.

This vision was not born out of coincidence, but what Promila ji humbly calls an act of divine intervention. From her first steps of studying special education in Hyderabad to tirelessly working on every detail, she built SOREM brick by brick, heart by heart.  Refusing to settle for isolation on the outskirts, she chose a prime residential area for SOREM, so these children would always be a visible, accepted part of the community. Her dedication transformed SOREM into a sanctuary where every child is welcomed, nurtured, and given the tools to discover their unique potential.

Promila ji is not just the founder of SOREM; she is its heart and soul. A former national-level athlete and a passionate educator, she brought to SOREM the same discipline, love, and unwavering spirit that defined her life.

Over the years, her work has been honored with numerous awards including the Life Time Achievement Award, Woman of the Year (2011), the Republic Day Award for Outstanding Social Service, and international recognition from the British Royal Family. Even today, at over 80 years of age, Promila ji’s enthusiasm never fades. She continues to innovate and lead SOREM with the same passion she had when it all began.

As one of SOREM’s coaches fondly said,
“Mrs. Mohan always goes the extra mile to help children achieve the mpossible.”

Our Mission

Mission → Desire of a special child

My Motherhad great expectations before
I was born, but I shattered her hopes
Because I was not like you…

She was much stronger – she taught me to
crawl, taught me to walk and taught me to talk
Because I had to be part of you…

She taught me with love, taught me with
patience, taught me during the day and
taught me as I lay
Because I had to be a part of you…

I do many wrongs, I don’t know the ways – but
teach me again and tolerate my ways,
Because I’ve to be a part of you…

My mother has labored for years
I’ve made endless efforts but
I’ve not learnt your ways.

Can I still be a part of you?
